HAD TO supervise an exam today. Thereâs nothing more boring than that. People donât generally cheat, but you have to be on the lookout. Mind you, itâs pretty tough, considering the size of our sports hall. Itâs hard to see what people are doing. I think the exam was chemical engineering.
I had lunch with Adam and Sarah. Adamâs Ancient Greece, and he came back a couple of weeks ago from his sabbatical. Theyâve invited me to go to this conference in August, in the States. Itâs a big Ancient Civilisations thing, but thatâs not my terrain. Also, I was planning on doing nothing this summer.
That never works outâusually I catch up on the article Iâm writing, start research on another one, that sort of thing.
But⦠this time I have a boyfriend! This time I might actually go somewhere!
I should ask Alex about that. Heâs out with Michael and some of his other friends tonight. He wanted me to go with them, but Iâve piles of work to do, and Iâve had a trying day.
âNot going to Sydney, eh?â Jack said when he found me standing by the kettle in the rec room. âI should have thought that was your very thing. Didnât you come up with the idea for that project? Isnât the end goal a series of popular historical books? Have you suddenly become allergic to success?â
âShut up,â I grumbled.
âOr is it your working-class boyfriend thatâs keeping you back?â he mused. âThatâs it, isnât it? Garyâ¦.â
âAlex!â
âRight, Alex wants to throw weights around in London, and so you have to stay in London too,â he said with a sad sigh. âMy dear, if you take my adviceââ
âOh yes, please,â I bit out. âGo ahead and teach me how to lead a happy life. Letâs see⦠if I want to date a man, shouldnât I first get engaged to a woman? Yes, right, there we go. Iâll ask Sarah. Sheâd do, wouldnât she?â
Sarah was just walking past, and she startled at hearing her name. âWhatâs that, pet?â
âIâm proposing to you,â I told her. âI think you and I should get married.â
âIâm already married,â she told me patiently.
âPerfect! I think that makes it all the better, doesnât it, Jack? Iâm not sure, but youâre the expert in fucked-up relationships. Go on, enlighten us!â
He sighed condescendingly. âAs someone who is older and more experienced, take it from me. Adonis comes and goes, but these kinds of career opportunities donât come around very often. This oneâs golden. Iâd go. I think you should go. Gary can come with you, or perhaps you can try it long distance. Whatever it takes, Leo.â
Then he gave me his most charming smile and left, as always with the last word, as always utterly unsinkable. Bastard.
Sarah watched him go and then tilted her head at me. âThat Australia thing?â
âYes,â I grumbled. âIâm not going. I donât know how the hell he found out.â
âOh, you should go, pet! It sounds like a wonderful opportunity, and that sort of
